Call for Visiting Researchers


Studying Mediterranean Area has been one of the most critical research tasks at Pusan University of Foreign Studies (Pusan, South Korea) which is a major international center for foreign languages teaching, area studies and culture research in Korea. Institute for Mediterranean Studies, with the help of its researchers and scholars of international distinction, has been actively engaged in exploring global trends, thus leading the Korean society to a wealth of information about Mediterranean areas from around the world.

In December 1997, IMS was founded with research interests on general aspects of civilization and to promote academic exchange in the diverse fields of Mediterranean studies. And IMS was selected as one of the members of Humanities Korea Project supported by the Korea Research Foundation from 2007. The Humanities Korea Project is to foster studies in liberal arts. IMS will receive approximately 9 hundred million Won each year for the next 10 years to promote research that will advance the boundaries of Liberal Arts and International Area Studies.

The main objective of IMS is to concentrate research efforts on political systems, economy, culture and society of the Mediterranean Region and to keep up with Korea’s social and academic needs for comprehensive studies on this region.

The IMS’s project details are,

-Research project: Build up Mediterranean Studies and strengthen supports for IMS’s Academic Activities.

-Saladin project: Provide Web Service on the Mediterranean Studies in Multiple Languages

-Educational project: Establish Graduate programs for next academic generation and open programs on the Mediterranean Area for general public.

-Related and supplementary business: Construct International Network for the Mediterranean Studies and Support national and international academic events related to the area

2. Qualification

-  Mediterranean Studies in the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, culture, arts, etc.

- Applicants should be proficient in one of languages: Hebrew, Turkish, French, Spanish, and Italian.

- Any researchers with Ph. D.


3. Duration

Applicants will be hired under a one-year (01, February, 2011~31,January,2012) contract


4. Required Conditions

- Selected applicants will publish at least one paper or one article on the journal of the institute, or a book, and attend all kinds of academic meetings to be held by the institute.


5. Documents to Submit

 Applicants are required to submit the following documents in PDF of DOC format to be considered.

-      Curriculum Vitae all including educational backgrounds, research careers, representative publications, and references

-      Research Plan in connection with Institute’s Research Agenda in a free format

-      Publications or the pull-out of articles

-      Certification of doctoral degrees

7. Salary & Research Fund

Annual wage is around 25,000~30,000 (US $) including health insurance, pension and other insurances. No allowances (commuter, housing, etc) will be provided separately, since they are included in the basic salary.

Excellent applicants will be provided research fund for the purpose of enhancing their studies.
